Preparing for PD
There's more involved in PD than simply making the decision.
You will need a small surgery, training and preparation of your home.
Some people find this intimidating, but the more you know and the more prepared you are the easier it is to get started with PD!

Before you begin at home peritoneal dialysis (PD), your home training nurse will visit with you in your home. He or she will check your home for safety issues and see where you plan to do your treatments. If issues are found a second visit may be required delaying your home PD treatments.
A clean and well lit room or other area you can close off from pets and family activity is highly recommended. Pets should not be in your treatment area while you are connecting or disconnecting your catheter for treatment. Airflow such as open windows or ceiling fans should be closed and off to minimize the disturbance of airflow in the room. You will need an area to perform your treatment,a place for immediate supplies and a storage area. If you are going to do APD you will also need a place by your bed to set up the cycler machine and necessary supplies. APD also requires a grounded outlet for power and a drain line for disposal of used dialysate to a suitable source.
During the time when the PD catheter system is “open” and more prone to bacteria and germs, every precaution must be taken to ensure not to contaminate your PD system. Mask, gloves and proper cleaning must be performed routinely. Remember it only takes one infection to possibly end your home PD treatments.

On the right is a "typical months delivery of PD dialysate and supplies. Make sure you carefully plan your storage area to prevent this from happening in your home. We can offer a few tips for your supply storage in your home to help in your decision. Most importantly is space, we recommend a minimum of a 5X5 area which you can stack your supplies, providing you are able to do so. A box of dialysate is surprisingly heavy and it may not be suitable for everyone to stack supplies. If you cannot stack supplies you will need even more floor space for your storage. You do not want to place the dialysate in direct sunlight and may use a blanket to cover your supplies if needed. Do not put your dialysate directly on a concrete basement floor as moisture will seep into your supplies, possibly damaging them. Find a way to be creative with used empty boxes and recycle them in a way that best suits you. Often these heavy duty boxes are great for people who are moving and provides a great way to get rid of them. |
