Types of Peritoneal Dialysis
There are two options when choosing to perform PD, each with advantages and disadvantages to consider. The patient will need to decide which form of PD will best suit their lifestyle and provide the best treatment. Your PD team will also have input on your decision based on your personal needs. Some health issues can also effect what type of PD you may be able to perform. The two types of PD are CAPD or manual and APD requiring an automated machine.
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
With CAPD, the patient manually performs his or her exchanges. Exchanges, generally take approximately 30 minutes and are performed three to four times during the day by placing a bag of dialysate fluid on an IV pole. Gravity then makes the filling and draining process possible without the use of a machine. This form of PD can even be performed while the patient is out of the home or traveling, as long as he or she has a sterile environment to perform the exchanges. |
Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD)
With automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), commonly referred to as continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) a cycler machine is required to automate the filling and draining process. Patients choose APD because it allows most of their dialysis to be performed while they sleep and does not interfere with their daily activities. Other patients may have trouble sleeping with a cycler machine and find manual treatment a better option for them. Every patient is different and often they are allowed to switch to the more preferred type of PD. Doctors and PD nurses will help patients decide which PD treatment regimen is best for them. |
Another important fact to consider is that APD most often will provide better treatment than CAPD because the treatment is done on a continues cycle enabling more toxins and waste products to be removed. Some patients may require use of both types of PD to maintain adequate clearances. If manual PD is not effective enough you may be asked to include or even switch to APD.
